Socialist darling and New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attended the Met Gala last night, wearing a dress with “tax the rich” emblazed down the back. The event, which is a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is one of the biggest fashion events in the world.
According to Fox News, Ocasio-Cortez wanted to create a discussion around “what it means to be working-class women of color at the Met.”
“We can’t just play along, but we need to break the fourth wall and challenge some of the institutions, and while the Met is known for its spectacle, we should have a conversation about it,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
Tickets to the event cost $30,000. It’s unknown if Ocasio-Cortez paid to attend or how much the dress cost.
The congresswoman’s statement was met with mixed response and many called her out of touch with reality for attending such a wealthy, celebrity filled event. Ocasio-Cortez addressed the “haters” in an Instagram post.
Some called the response from the right an “attack” on AOC, saying she’s doing what she can to change a broken system.
Those on the right weren’t quite as praiseworthy of her statement.
