Krispy Kreme offers free donut to people who show vaccination card; doctor freaks out

By now, most states have rolled out the COVID-19 vaccine to a large range of age groups and according to President Biden, everyone should have access to the shot by May 1st. Krispy Kreme Donuts thought they’d sweeten things up for people by offering a free glazed donut to anyone who shows their vaccination card.

A nice gesture after a long year filled with lockdowns, mask mandates and uncertainty, right?

Not so fast.

Dr. Leana Wen, who used to head up Planned Parenthood, threw a Twitter fit, saying donuts are unhealthy for people to consume.

“Hey @krispykreme, I love that you want to thank people for getting the #covid19#vaccine! Every incentive helps & free donuts may help move the needle. However, donuts are a treat that’s not good for health if eaten every day. Here’s my suggestion for what to do instead,” she tweeted. Wen then offered a series of alternatives rather than stopping in to get that delicious fried goodness.

Even people who don’t want to get the vaccine can get a free donut! Their web site says:

“We understand that choosing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine is a highly personal decision. We advise all employees and guests to consult with their healthcare provider regarding whether to obtain a COVID-19 vaccination and which vaccine to receive after reviewing the available information. If you have made the personal decision to not receive the COVID vaccine, please visit us on Mondays, 3/29/21 – 5/24/21, to receive a free Original Glazed® doughnut and a medium brewed coffee to get your week off to a good start.”

Sounds like Wen need to have a donut and chill a bit. Krispy Kreme is just trying to do something nice for people and they can choose to eat donuts or not.
