Over 100 staffers at the news site Politico signed a letter to CEO Robert Allbritton saying they were disgusted the site allowed conservative commentator Ben Shapiro to guest author an edition of the Politico Playbook.
Shapiro, who is the co-founder of The Daily Wire, penned an essay titled “The real reason most republicans opposed impeachment.”
In it, he wrote:
Opposition to impeachment comes from a deep and abiding conservative belief that members of the opposing political tribe want their destruction, not simply to punish Trump for his behavior.
Unity looks a lot like “sign onto our agenda, or be lumped in with the Capitol rioters.” If you supported Trump in any way, you were at least partially culpable, the argument goes. It’s not just Trump who deserves vitriol — it’s all 74 million people who voted for him.
And that claim, many conservatives believe, will serve as the basis for repression everywhere from social media to employment.
Politico staffers called the decision to publish Shapiro’s piece “disgusting” and said it “demoralized a substantial portion of the newsroom.”
According to Mediaite, staffers requested “a clarification and improvement of Politico’s editorial standards, an increase in newsroom diversity, an editor’s note on Shapiro’s Playbook post, and an internal apology for management’s response to staff criticism of the decision to publish Shapiro.”
