The push for the NFL team to retire the name has been building for some time, but today it’s official. They will be dropping “Redskins” and replacing the entire brand with a yet to be determined logo and name.
The team released a statement about the change.
“Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review,” they said. “Dan Snyder and Coach [Ron] Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”
Last week, it was reported that all Native American imagery would be removed from their logo and the team was reviewing whether or not to change the name.
Team owner Dan Snyder had previously said in interviews a name change would never happen.
