The coronavirus pandemic continues to take a toll on our country. There have been more than 450,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States, 16,000 people have died from the virus and nearly 17 million Americans have filed for unemployment in the last three weeks.
Without a doubt, people in this country are hurting and scared. They’re scared, not only for their physical health but whether they’ll be able to pay their bills.
But one lawmaker’s answer for to help those struggling financially is poorly misguided. Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar wants to stop all rent payments until the coronavirus pandemic is over.
I get it, it’s an attempt and suggestion to help people but how would you even do that? How would the government even enforce something like that?
Additionally, why would you rob landlords of money? There are already people who are struggling financially, why add more people to that mix?
Also, we are talking about the same federal government that is struggling to get hospitals personal protective equipment and getting enough tests out, doing this? If rent payments are cancelled until the federal government eradicates the pandemic, then landlords may never seen a rent check ever again.
