The unemployment claims numbers are out and it’s grim. A record number of unemployment claims were filed last week, with 6.6 million Americans applying for benefits after companies shuttered their doors in response to the Coronavirus. The numbers doubled from two weeks ago when 3.3 million filed.
Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, and Texas are among the states with the largest amount of claims.
“These are numbers that are way out of the range that we have seen,” Michelle Meyer, head of U.S. economics at Bank of America, told NBC. “During the financial crisis, we were seeing a peak of about 650,000 [first-time applications] a week.”
