It’s official: the 2020 summer Olympics in Tokyo have been postponed until next year due to the uncertainty of the Coronoavirus longevity. The International Olympic Committee and Japanese government have agreed to move the games until 2021, but no official date has been announced.
The modern games have never been disrupted due to a global pandemic, so the decision move them is unprecedented.
“The leaders agreed that the Olympic Games in Tokyo could stand as a beacon of hope to the world during these troubled times and that the Olympic flame could become the light at the end of the tunnel in which the world finds itself at present,” the organizing committee said in a joint statement.
It was originally thought they might delay the start of the games for a month.
