Former Vice President Joe Biden was on the campaign trail in South Carolina over the weekend, stopping at Saint Anthony Catholic Church for mass. However, when Biden tried to take the holy sacrament of communion, he was reportedly denied by the priest because of his stance on abortion.
“Sadly, this past Sunday, I had to refuse Holy Communion to former Vice President Joe Biden,” Father Robert E. Morey told the Morning News. “Holy Communion signifies we are one with God, each other and the Church. Our actions should reflect that. Any public figure who advocates for abortion places himself or herself outside of Church teaching.”
The priest added that he would keep Biden in his prayers and it’s a priest’s “responsibility to minister to those souls entrusted to his care and that he must do so in even the most difficult situations.”
According to the source, Biden’s team did not confirm he attended church at Saint Anthony and have not issued a statement on the priest’s refusal of communion.
Biden used to oppose public funding of abortion, but changed his stance over the summer.
