Now that Eric Swalwell is out of the race for the Democratic nominee, Beto O’Rourke has become the gun grabbing candidate. He continued that push at last night’s debate, failing to really explain why he’ll let people keep handguns but wants to round up all the AR-15 style assault weapons.
Even though it was pointed out to him by the debate moderator that handguns are responsible for the majority of gun deaths, O’Rourke stuck with his talking points to ban AR’s.
“First of all, there’s a significant difference between a handgun and an AR-15,” O’Rourke said. “If you talk to or listen to trauma surgeons, as I have, and they describe the wounds from those weapons of war, they expel all their kinetic energy inside of you. They just destroy your organs, cause you to bleed to death, very different from what a handgun will do. And there’s a legitimate use for a handgun, to protect yourself in your home.”
He also clashed with Pete Buttigieg on stage over the issue.
.@BetoORourke on his proposed mandatory buyback of assault weapons: "If we just throw up our hands and say this is going to be tough to do or some people aren't going to follow the law, then we… become complicit in the deaths of our fellow Americans."https://t.co/gwO61oFLKL pic.twitter.com/WC51fr6xBR
