Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib visited the Detroit Police this week and suggested to their Chief of police James Craig that they should only hire African Americans to run facial recognition software.
“Analysts need to be African Americans, not people that are not,” Tlaib said. “I think non-African Americans think African Americans all look the same.”
“I’ve seen it even on the House floor: People calling Elijah Cummings ‘John Lewis,’ and John Lewis ‘Elijah Cummings,’ and they’re totally different people,” Tlaib continued. “I see it all the time, and I love them because they go along with it.”
Democrat Rep @RashidaTlaib said Detroit Police should only hire blacks to operate facial recognition software.
Police leadership correctly stated that they want to hire people who are trained, regardless of their race.

Craig replied that people are hired and trained to read the software and said he trusts people regardless of their race.
The department had invited Tlaib to visit after she criticized them on Twitter for the errors their software makes when identifying suspects in criminal investigations.
Based on her tweets following the visit, it doesn’t seem like the meeting changed her mind.
Even Chief Craig admitted this technology isn’t perfect & the human element plays a major role. The science suggests that people have difficulty identifying faces of people from other races & we must take it seriously. I hope @detroitpolice will read these studies. 6/7
