Amber Guyger, the former Dallas police officer who shot her neighbor, has been convicted by a jury of murder.
During her statement and testimony, Guyger says she was tired after a shift and mistook her neighbor, Botham Jean, as an intruder when she accidentally walked into his apartment instead of her own.
Guyger shot Jean, who was eating ice cream on his couch, after he failed to put his hands up. She called police right after the shooting and according to 911 tapes, can be heard saying “I’m going to lose my job” while apologizing to Jean for shooting him.
According to USA Today, during her testimony, she says she wishes it had been her that was shot instead.
“I hate that I have to live with this every single day of my life and I ask God for forgiveness, and I hate myself every single day,” Guyger said as she looked across the courtroom at Jean’s family. “I wish he was the one with the gun and he killed me.”
The jury began deliberating yesterday and reached a verdict this morning.
Her punishment has yet to be decided.
