Gender reveal parties became the norm right during the time that all my friends started having babies. I thought it was a stupid idea – who really cares what you are having beyond your immediate family and friends? And all the overdone announcements only seem like an attention grabbing bit by parents who seek comments and likes on social media.
The woman who started it all back in 2008, recently wrote a post on her Facebook page saying she now has mixed feelings about the trend that just won’t die. Additionally, her daughter that she was expecting at the time, now identifies as non-binary and wear suits.
“I’m glad gender reveal parties brought joy to some people, but that joy has been at the expense of nonbinary and trans people,” Jenna Karvunidis said. “Even if you say a problem doesn’t affect ‘me’ personally, we should all have enough humanity to realize we don’t have to cause pain for marginalized people to have joy for ourselves.”
Speaking about Bee, her daughter who identifies as non-binary, she wrote:
Who cares what gender the baby is? I did at the time because we didn’t live in 2019 and didn’t know what we know now – that assigning focus on gender at birth leaves out so much of their potential and talents that have nothing to do with what’s between their legs.
“PLOT TWIST, the world’s first gender-reveal party baby is a girl who wears suits!”
Bee also apparently has her own Instagram account where she shows off her suited looks.
“There are plenty of reasons to eat cake. You can pick one that doesn’t reinforce an attitude of harm toward members of the LGBTQ community,” she concluded.
