Rep. Omar says people should be ‘more fearful of white men’ because they cause the most deaths in America

An old interview with Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar recently resurfaced where she’s asked about people’s fears of jihadist terrorists in the United States. The reporter references Ft. Hood and San Bernardino ‘s radicalized shootings when phrasing the question, but Instead of addressing what he asked, she redirects to say that Americans should be more “fearful of white men” because they’re the ones causing all the deaths.

“I would say our country should be more fearful of white men across our country because they are actually causing most of the deaths within this country,” Omar said. “And so if fear was the, the driving force of policies to keep America safe — Americans safe inside of this country — we should be profiling, monitoring, and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men,” she answered.

Watch the clip.

Omar is probably thinking about the statistics surrounding white men and mass shootings, but that’s not what she said. She blames white people for causing most of the deaths in this country, but according to statistics from the Department of Justice, that’s simply not the case.

If you take a look at the trends by race, which appears on page 11 of the linked report, you’ll find that African American’s commit just over 50% of the murders in America, despite being only 13% of the total population of the United States.

Additionally, the leading causes of death in the United States, according to the CDC, are:

  • Heart disease: 647,457
  • Cancer: 599,108
  • Accidents (unintentional injuries): 169,936
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 160,201
  • Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 146,383
  • Alzheimer’s disease: 121,404
  • Diabetes: 83,564
  • Influenza and pneumonia: 55,672
  • Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 50,633
  • Intentional self-harm (suicide): 47,173

So her statement saying “white men cause the most deaths” is not only false, but it’s also steeped in racism as well. Omar has not responded to requests to clarify those comments and it’s unlikely that she will.
