AXIOS is reporting that Democratic socialists have their sights set on Chuck Schumer or Kirsten Gillibrand’s Senate seat and plan to draft Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to primary one of them.
The challenge could happen in either 2022 (Schumer’s seat) or 2024 (Gillibrand’s seat).
AOC’s communications director isn’t saying much about the buzz around the freshman congresswoman’s future, repeating that they’re only focused on her current role.
Corbin Trent, Ocasio-Cortez’s communications director, said that when she thinks down the road, she thinks in terms of transitioning Democrats to a party that’s unified around progressive policies.
As to eventually challenging one of the New York senators, Trent said: “Having worked on her campaign, I don’t think we’re going to be moving to a different role any time soon.”
While it’s still early, some polls show Ocasio-Cortez might not fare well in a statewide race.
And of course, a lot could happen between now and then – political stars come and go quickly in both the GOP and on the Democratic side.
