Snapchat released a gender swap filter recently and if you’ve been on social media at all in the past week or two, you’ve probably seen people trying it out to see what they might look like as someone of the opposite gender.
Some transgender people aren’t happy about it and Bailey Coffman said in an AP News story, “my gender is not a costume.”
“This story that I feel is very real. I lost a lot to be who I am, and I fought really hard for the body that I’m in. And when certain people post it and write about how silly it is and how goofy they look with this filter,” she continued, “it makes light of the transgender experience.”

Others say it disgusts and triggers them.
This snapchat filter trend is disgusting, as a trans woman. Ive seen so many cis people pawn it off as a 'big lol look at this funny meme snapchat made'
While us trand people are out here struggling and borderline suffering every single day to even look even 1% like our identity

There’s a special place in hell for cisgender folks who won’t be friends with a trans person; but will lay around with their friends swapping their gender with this new snapchat filter.

A few trans folks I know have made a really good point about the gender switch filter on Snapchat… it can be really triggering and cause hurt toward trans folks so just keep that in mind when using this filter and joking about it. I apologize to any trans folks I may have

However a few feel the filter makes them feel like their true selves.
As most of you know I’m trans and sometimes it’s the crazy things like a snapchat filter that can make me feel comfortable and happy in my own skin for a few moments. #NewProfilePic pic.twitter.com/EMwQobhJmv
