According to the Sioux City Journal, Iowa 4th District Rep. Steve King says he can relate to what Jesus went through, comparing his persecution over white nationalism comments to that of Christ’s suffering on the cross.
King told a small audience at a town hall meeting, “For all that I’ve been through — and it seems even strange for me to say it — but I am at a certain peace, and it is because of a lot of prayers for me.”
Then went on to say, “And, when I have to step down to the floor of the House of Representatives, and look up at those 400-and-some accusers, you know we just passed through Easter and Christ’s passion, and I have better insight into what He went through for us partly because of that experience.”
His comments stemmed from an audience question about how Christian principles can boost the nation toward healing and solving problems.
According to the report, some audience members also asked him to resign over the comments, to which King responded, “The New York Times misquoted me…I cannot let that stand.”
