South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg has made it official: he’s joining the 2020 race on the Democrats side. Buttigeig formed an exploratory committee in January and has risen in popularity on a national level in the last few weeks.
At 37-year-old, Buttigeig is the youngest in the ever growing field of Democratic hopefuls, was a Rhodes Scholar and Afghanistan War veteran. He is also openly gay, and has made news recently for criticizing Vice President Pence’s Christian faith.
He’s also risen in the polls, sometimes coming in only behind former Vice President Joe Biden.
Buttigeig made his announcement from the historic Studebaker building and livestreamed on Facebook and Twitter.
