Tuesday, astronaut Mark Kelly announced his intention to run for the U.S. Senate in Arizona, for John McCain’s seat.
Kelly, the husband of former Arizona representative Gabby Giffords, released a video launching his campaign.

In the video, Kelly talks, with his wife by his side, about his background, his time in the military and his time in space on the space shuttle. He also discusses the Tucson, Arizona event in which Giffords was shot in the face by a gunman.
If Kelly wins the Democratic nomination, he would go up against former representative and current Arizona Senator Republican Martha McSally.
McSally was appointed to the seat by Arizona Gov. John Ducey after losing to Democrat Krysten Sinema for Arizona’s other U.S. Senate seat.
The winner of Arizona Senate race in 2020 would finish out the remainder of John McCain’s term until 2022.
