Today, freshman Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey announced the Green New Deal.
The fourteen page resolution embraces a shift to 100% renewable and zero-emission energy sources and calls for the elimination of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture, transportation, manufacturing and construction.
“The goal is to use the expansion of renewable energy sources to fully meet 100% of our nation’s power demand through only renewable sources in 10 years, but since no one has yet created a full plan to hit that goal, we are currently unsure if we will be able to decommission every nuclear plant that fast,” Ocasio-Cortez’s office said in an FAQ.
They would also “Totally overhaul transportation by massively expanding electric vehicle manufacturing, build charging stations everywhere, build out high- speed rail at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary, create affordable public transit available to all, with goal to replace every combustion-engine vehicle.”
To do so, there would be a huge investment in wind power and solar production.
They also want to get rid of farting cows.
“We set a goal to get to net-zero, rather than zero emissions, in 10 years because we aren’t sure that we’ll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast.”
The Green New Deal also calls for “remedying historic injustices visited upon the poor and people of color.”
Also included, health care for all, affordable housing, union protections for jobs, and a sustainable living wage, and “keeping the business environment free of monopolistic competition.”
There’s no mention of exactly how the resolutions will be paid for, other than saying Congress will appropriate federal funds for it.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi isn’t promising anything, telling Politico, “It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive. The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it right?”
