There’s another candidate in the race to lead the city of Indianapolis. State Senator Jim Merritt announced his mayoral campaign during a Thursday afternoon press conference.
Introducing Merritt at Thursday’s press conference was former Republican Mayor Greg Ballard. Ballard was mayor of Indianapolis for the eight years prior to current Indianapolis mayor, Democrat Joe Hogsett.
Merritt’s entry into the race comes after much speculation and rumor about his running to replace Hogsett. Under Hogsett’s tenure, Indianapolis has seen record numbers of homicides, setting records in each of the last three years. In 2018 alone, there were 159 murders.
Additionally, the roads in and around the Circle City are like Swiss cheese. Anyone who drives around the city 10 minutes will notice the massive number of potholes covering the roads.
Merritt is the second Republican to get into the race.
