A few years ago, the #ShoutYourAbortion campaign launched as a forum for women to tell their abortion stories. According to the organization’s web site, #ShoutYourAbortion “is a decentralized network of individuals talking about abortion on our own terms and creating space for others to do the same. SYA is everywhere: on the sides of buildings, in art and outfits and zines and social media. Abortion is normal. Our stories are ours to tell. This is not a debate.”
It’s been a while since the group trended, but they’re back with a new book and a video where activist Amelia Bonow talks to kids about abortion and tells them aborting babies is OK and a part of God’s plan.
When one girl is asked what she knows about abortion, she answers “I don’t exactly know what happens, but you go and get rid of the baby,” to which Bonow replies that it’s basically like a dentist appointment. “You go to the doctor, and they put this little straw inside of your cervix, and then inside of your uterus, and then they just suck the pregnancy out.”
Some of the older kids asked why she hadn’t used protection and Bonow flippantly replied, “Whatever. We did what we wanted to do, and then got rid of the baby afterwards, easy peasy. What’s the big deal?”
Forget about adoption too. When a young man replied to her question, “Do we want people to just have all those babies?” that adoption was a better choice, she disagreed, saying that would force her to create life, which she believes begins after birth.
At the end of the video, when discussing the pro-life movement, Bonow says she refuses to call pro-lifers that and instead refers to them as anti-choice because it’s “just a propaganda term because pro-lifers don’t want to take care of the poor, or help people who have given birth to their babies.”
And if you didn’t think she was hardcore enough, when asked if she has any tattoos, she pulls her lower lip down to reveal the word “abortion” tattooed on the inside of her mouth.
