In an effort to combat climate change, Ocasio-Cortez wants to raise taxes ’60 or 70 percent’ for highest earners

Democratic socialists are obsessed with wealthy Americans. Over and over again, we’ve heard them talk about how the 1% are not paying their fair share and that they need to be taxed into oblivion to help pay for everything from education to health care.

Now, they want them to pay for a plan that would combat climate change.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the freshmen congresswoman from New York, sat down with Anderson Cooper for an interview that will air on CBS’s 60 Minutes on Sunday. In that interview, she proposes what she’s calling a “Green New Deal.”

Her plan is to eliminate carbon emissions over the next twelve years and she says “It’s going to require a lot of rapid change that we don’t even conceive as possible right now. What is the problem with trying to push our technological capacities to the furthest extent possible?”

How will she pay for the plan? She tells Cooper that she supports a tax hike as high as 70 percent on the ultra-rich.

“You know, you look at our tax rates back in the ’60s and when you have a progressive tax rate system, your tax rate, you know, let’s say, from zero to $75,000 may be ten percent or 15 percent, et cetera.” Ocasio-Cortez said. “But once you get to, like, the tippy tops, on your 10 millionth dollar, sometimes you see tax rates as high as 60 or 70 percent. That doesn’t mean all $10 million are taxed at an extremely high rate, but it means that as you climb up this ladder you should be contributing more.”

She went on to say that it’s radicals who have changed our country over the course of history.

“I think that it only has ever been radicals that have changed this country,” Ocasio-Cortez says. “Abraham Lincoln made the radical decision to sign the Emancipation Proclamation. Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the radical decision to embark on establishing programs like Social Security. That is radical.”

When Cooper asked her if she considers herself to be a radical, Ocasio-Cortez responded,  “You know, if that’s what radical means, call me a radical.”
