Martha McSally will be appointed to John McCain’s Senate seat

She’s ending up in the Senate after all.

Gov. Doug Ducey has decided to fill John McCain’s Senate seat with Republican Martha McSally who earlier this year, ran for Jeff Flake’s open seat. She narrowly lost to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema in that race but will now take over for Sen. Jon Kyl, who had previously been appointed to serve out a portion of the late Sen. John McCain’s remaining term.

McSally told the Arizona Republic, “I am humbled and grateful to have this opportunity to serve and be a voice for all Arizonans,” McSally’s statement said. “I look forward to working with Senator-Elect Kyrsten Sinema and getting to work from day one.”

This is also a historic moment – for the first time Arizona has two female Senators.
