There’s another name to throw into the mix as a potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidate: Pete Buttigieg.
The mayor of South Bend announced Monday morning that he will not be running for a third term as the northern Indiana city.
This is not a major surprise, Buttigieg, for several years, has been a rising star in the Democratic Party. The openly gay mayor and Afghanistan war vet has not been shy about raising his national profile. After the 2016 election, Buttigieg ran to become the head of the National Democratic Party chairman, ultimately losing to Tom Perez.
However, don’t expect to hear anymore news from Buttigieg on a potential presidential run for a while. He said Monday that he will not be making announcement about his political future before the end of the year.
Oddly, the 36-year-old mayor’s announcement comes before he is expected to talk to a group of Iowa Democrats.
Who else will throw their hat into what looks to be a very crowded field of 2020 presidential Democratic candidates?
