It was a story about kindness that went viral last year – a couple ran out of gas and a homeless man gave them his last $20 so they could fill up their tank. In return, the couple started a GoFundMe for him, which raised over $400,000.
Not long after that, the man said he never received the funds. His lawyer told CNN, “From what I can see, the GoFundMe account raised $402,000 and GoFundMe charged a fee of approximately $30,000. Mark D’Amico and Kate McClure gave Johnny about $75,000. There should be close to another $300,000 available to Johnny.”
However, in a twist no one saw coming, it seems Johnny Bobbitt was in on the whole thing from the beginning and now all three are facing charges of conspiracy and theft by deception for working together in the fraudulent scheme.
The couple has turned themselves in, but according to police, Bobbitt has yet to be taken into custody.
