Add another to the list items of The Grinch stole: this weekend’s box office.
The Dr. Suess tale about the evil character, whose heart eventually grew several sizes, snuck in a took and made off with $66M to top the box office.
The famously green character, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch in 2018’s version, topped last weekend’s No. 1, the Freddie Mercury and Queen biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Rami Malek, as Mercury, was still able to sing his way to nearly $31M in its second week of release.
“The Grinch” was also able to hold off a wave of other newcomers this weekend, including, the action, horror flick “Overlord” and “The Girl in the Dragon’s Web.” The J.J. Abrams’ produced “Overlord” brought in a little more than $10M and took the third spot. “The Girl in the Dragon’s Web” disappointingly took the fifth spot with only $8M.
Will “The Grinch” stay atop the box office next weekend as the Harry Potter-related “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” and the Mark Wahlberg film, “Instant Family” open?
The short answer: Absolutely not. The Harry Potter fans will come out in droves for the second Fantastic Beasts flick.
