‘Venom’ scores big, opens at No. 1 with $80M

Yet another Marvel film is atop the weekend box office. Moviegoers again showed their love of anything and everything Marvel. “Venom,” the action, flick about the comic book villain, starring Tom Hardy, come away with $80 million.  That was nearly double the take the second place film, the well-received remake of “A Star is Born.”

The film starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, took in a little more than $41M in its first weekend. The film has been getting rave reviews both for the film itself and for the performances. No doubt, multiple Oscar nominations are in its future.

Rounding out the top three was the family-animated film, “Smallfoot,” which took in an impressive $14.9M in its second week of releases.

Will “Venom” be able to eat up next week’s competition and hold onto the top spot at the box office for a second week in a row? Likely, but it will have some tough competition as another Oscar, “First Man,” starring Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong, opens next weekend.
