I was ALL about Avril Lavigne when her debut album came out during my freshman year of college. Her second album, Under My Skin, remains one of my favorite albums of all time.
So when I heard she had a new track out, I gave it a listen on Spotifiy and was surprised to hear that it’s a worship song. Lavigne has been out of the music spotlight for five years due to a battle with Lyme’s disease and nearly died.
She tells MTV, “I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”
God keep my head above water / Don’t let me drown / It gets harder / I’ll meet you there at the altar / As I fall down to my knees / Don’t let me drown / Don’t let me drown
WAY different than her “Sk8er Boi” days. And it seems to be working for her – “Head Above Water” has topped the worldwide iTunes charts since its release.
