Arizona Sen. John McCain has passed away, according to several reports Saturday night.
The former Republican presidential candidate was 81 years old.
Having graduated from the US Naval Academy, McCain was serving in Vietnam when he was shot down. He was a prisoner of war, being held captive and tortued by the North Vietnamese for five and a half years, until his release in 1973.
After being elected to the House of Representatives in 1983, McCain was first elected to his Arizona senate seat in 1986.
During his time in Congress, McCain was often referred to as a “maverick” for his propensity to buck the trend, even voting against his own party.
McCain is survived by his wife Cindy and his children John, James, Meghan and Bridget.
After news of his passing several passed along their condolences to the McCain family and expressed their feelings about Sen. McCain.

As you go through life, you meet few truly great people. John McCain was one of them. His dedication to his country and the military were unsurpassed, and maybe most of all, he was a truth teller – never afraid to speak truth to power in an era where that has become all too rare.
