‘The Meg’ takes a huge bite out of box office, opens at #1

The Transporter, Dwight from “The Office” and a massive shark. What could go wrong?

Apparently, not much. “The Meg”surprisingly took the top spot at this weekend’s box office, gobbling up $44.5 million.

While not a perfect film by any means, “The Meg” really is a ton of fun. The writing is weak, supposedly intelligent characters make one stupid decision after another, but honestly, so what?

The film’s plot is completely absurd, but both the filmmakers and the actors revel in this fact. It’s a tad too long and the first 20 minutes or so is particularly slow, but there is plenty of campiness and near shark attacks that make for a thoroughly entertaining way to spend two hours.

Tom Cruise’s latest, “Mission Impossible: Fallout” continues to perform well, coming in at No. 2 with $20 million as the sweet and enjoyable “Christopher Robin” came in third in its second week of its release with $12.4 million.

This other weekend’s big releases: the horror flick “Slenderman” and Spike Lee’s “BlackkKlansman,” came in fourth and fifth.
