Dylan Roof’s Sister Arrested for Having Weapons on School Grounds
Morgan Roof, the eighteen-year-old sister of Dylan Roof, was charged in Colombia, S.C. with simple possession of marijuana and two counts of carrying weapons on school grounds.
If you remember, Dylan Roof was convicted in December of 2016 for murdering nine African Americans during a prayer service at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C.
Yesterday, Morgan seemed disgruntled with the student walkout and posted this on her Snapchat:
Shortly after, she was arrested on school grounds for possession of marijuana, pepper spray and a knife, according to the sheriff’s department.
She was active on Tumblr as well, often answering questions about her brother. Morgan wrote, “For those who added me on SnapChat. DON’T ASK ME ABOUT DYLANN. On here I don’t mind but plz not on SnapChat. Thanksssss.” There are also numerous photos of them together as children.
What does it say about the Roof’s home life that one child massacred people based on their skin color and the other seemed to be going down the same path? According to a piece in the New York Times, the Roof children were probably abused, the parents were divorced and had numerous financial problems.
People may scoff at traditional family values, but the breakdown in the nuclear family certainly seems to be contributing to the rise of violent youth. Dylan and Morgan Roof are proof that children are greatly affected emotionally and mentally when their home life is in turmoil.
If we want to start fixing the growing problem of mass shootings and domestic terrorism, maybe we should start by fixing the problems at home.
