Over the weekend, an Indianapolis Colts player and his Uber driver were killed in a drunk driving hit and run. Edwin Jackson, a linebacker for the NFL team and Jeffrey Monroe were standing outside their car on Interstate 70 when they were hit and killed.
An Indiana State Police officer was patrolling the area and came upon the scene and when turning on his lights, the suspect, 37-year-old Manuel Orrego-Savala, tried to flee the scene on foot. He was apprehended but gave a fake name when taken into custody.
Today, it was released that Orrego-Savala was in the country illegally and deported twice, once in 2007 and 2009. He was also driving without a license. Currently, he’s being held for immigration officials at the Marion County jail in Indianapolis.
Following the tragedy, the Colts released this statement on Twitter:
It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of one of our own.
Edwin Jackson always brought a smile to our locker room and the community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
We will miss him greatly: https://t.co/Vuql2FD59R pic.twitter.com/7gVR9PvmuA
