The economy is good. Stock markets are soaring and unemployment is at a historically low rate. Tonight, expect President Trump to address all those things in his first State of the Union address to Congress and the nation.
Here are some other things to watch for this evening:
1. 2018 Agenda
Now that the tax bill has passed, expect Trump to focus more on immigration, building the wall and DACA. According to a White House plan revealed last week, Trump is calling for a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and proposed $25 billion for border security as well as tougher legal immigration laws.
Healthcare is likely to come up as well. 2017 was a failed attempt at a full Obamacare repeal/replace although the individual mandate is gone, thanks to the tax bill.
2. Russia: The Elephant in the Room
Yes, we’re STILL talking about Russian interference in last year’s election. Will Trump address it or ignore it completely?
3. Planned Parenthood/Protection of Unborn Life
Two weeks ago, Trump made history by being the first president to speak in person at the March for Life. Many of his remarks were very pro-life and he urged the Senate to pass the Pain-Capable bill. That bill failed to pass yesterday but expect another try, especially if Republicans pick seats up in the mid-term elections.
Trump and Republicans elected also promised to defund Planned Parenthood and we’re still waiting.
4. Melania’s Guests
Mrs. Trump will welcome fifteen guests to sit with her during the address. Those chosen have benefited from Trump’s tax plan, are members of the military, along with the leader of the “Cajun Navy” and people on the front lines of the battle against opioid addiction. The Trump children (minus Barron) will also be present.
